AEM Alumna receives the National Science Foundation Fellowship

The department would like to congratulate AEM alumna, Katherine Glasheen, on being awarded the National Science Foundation fellowship (NSF). This prestigious program recognizes and supports graduate students who are pursuing masters and doctoral degrees that are based on research in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Katherine graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics from the University of Minnesota in the spring of 2016. She is now pursuing a PhD in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Colorado, Boulder, under advisor, Dr. Eric Frew. Her current research involves network-enabled autonomy for aerial robots with the goal of expanding the autonomous capabilities of small, unmanned aircrafts systems (sUAS) through the development of network infrastructure.

Katherine says, "If airborne sUAS can take advantage of off-board resources for computation, updated weather and traffic information, and data storage, a network of architecture will advance scientific research and expand planetary exploration capabilities."

Katherine hopes to explore fundamental research questions in the following areas:

  • Dispersed off-board computing
  • Communication in fading network connections
  • Requests from multiple airborne vehicles
  • Safe decision-making in uncertain environments
  • Off-board machine intelligence

As a University of Minnesota student, Katherine participated in an independant Wind Energy project that consisted of designing an aerodynamically representative, small-scale wind turbine with Professor Peter Seiler and his former student Dr. Jennifer Annoni. She says that this experience greatly influenced her decision to pursue a PhD, and provided her with fundamental skills that allow her to find success in each day.

The department wishes Katherine the best of luck as she continues working towards her PhD.
