Professor Coletti Receives CAREER Award
Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics Professor Filippo Coletti has received the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award for his work on fluid mechanics of human airways.
The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a foundation-wide activity that offers the NSF's most prestigious awards in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.
Coletti plans to study the influence of the structure of the respiratory system, such as branching patterns in the bronchi and the properties of airway walls, on its function, including how inhaled therapeutic drugs or harmful particulates are transported and deposited in the lungs. This project will also engage underrepresented K-12 students, who will learn about fluid mechanics and physiology, while being sensitized on the effects of smoking and poor air quality.
